Why #Puberty is Challenging for #T1D

HGHAll good things come with age, if you look at it from that perspective. However the challenges we all face with puberty are magnified for teens with Type 1 diabetes because of the necessary hormone we know as human growth hormone (HGH). So if you’re looking to blame a behavior on high blood sugar, stop looking for a ‘bad guy’. It’s actually par for the course in a teenage body. By default, HGH stimulates insulin resistance in teenagers with Type 1 diabetes. The reason for this is because HGH and insulin are 2 hormones that do the same thing: grow the body or grow the energy in the body. If they are concurrent in the body, the body will resist one (insulin) to allow the other (HGH) to do its job.  On the flip side, when that same teenager reaches the plateau in his or her 20s, their insulin sensitivity will correct itself. This would be the ideal time to call in a continuous glucose monitor to help navigate the rocky terrain of insulin dosing. A thought occurred to me and I shared it with YouTube.
